Delphine Arnould de Cool-Fortin

Delphine Arnould de Cool, née Fortin (1830 – 1911) was a French painter and writer on Limoges porcelain.
Cool-Fortin was born as the daughter of the painter Paul Fortin in Limoges.〔Delphine Arnould de Cool-Fortin in the RKD〕 She was something of a child prodigy and became a successful painter at a young age, signing works as ''Delphine Fortin''. She married Alexandre de Cool and had two sons born in Limoges, including the painter Gabriel de Cool born in 1854, and a daughter born in Paris after the couple moved there soon afterwards. During this period, she signed works as ''Delphine de Cool''.〔(Cool, Delphine (de) ) in ''Dictionnaire de l'artisanat et des métiers'', by Institut Superieur des Metiers〕 Her husband was a writer and the couple were both members of the Société des gens de lettres. Madame de Cool became a teacher and a writer on Limoges porcelain, and was head of an "Élisa Lemonnier" school in 1890 when she published her treatise on porcelain in French and English called ''Traité de peintures vitrifiables sur porcelaine dure et porcelaine tendre sur émail''.〔Traité de peintures vitrifiables sur porcelaine dure et porcelaine tendre sur émail; Émail Genre Limoges; Émail Or Gravé, Faïence Grand Feu sur Émail et Sous Émail; 2e édition Revue et corrigée, avec traduction anglaise par Madame Delphine DE COOL; ex peintre de la Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, Statuaire, Peintre et Directrice de L'École de Dessin Subventionnée du 1re Arrondissement de la Ville de Paris, Officier d'Académie, 20 Medailles d'Or et Diplomes d'Honneur, Récompenses Salon de Paris, Medaille d'Argent Exposition Universelle de Paris, Medaille de 1re Classe Union Centrale Paris; Paris, E. Dentu, éditeur; Librairie de la Société des Gens de Lettres; 3, Place de Valois, Palais-Royal, 1890〕
After her husband died she remarried the writer Arthur Arnould in 1890.
She exhibited paintings at Chicago World Exposition in 1893, and her treatise was included in the Women's Library, along with a discussion of her miniature works in gouache by her second husband (writing under his pseudonym ''A. Matthey'').〔(1893 Chicago World's Fair and Exposition )〕〔(1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition’s Woman’s Building Library )〕
Her painting ''A Good Cigarette'' was included in the 1905 book ''Women Painters of the World''.〔''(Women painters of the world, from the time of Caterina Vigri, 1413-1463, to Rosa Bonheur and the present day )'', by Walter Shaw Sparrow, The Art and Life Library, Hodder & Stoughton, 27 Paternoster Row, London, 1905〕
